Gemma Cole
The paintings show dreamlike but familiar domestic scenes, a world made of opulent landscapes and genre views.
There’s immediacy, mystery, stillness, lightness, darkness – all embedded into layers of drawing and colour. Thickly covered areas contrast with thin barely-there washes, with the paint slowly absorbing into soft wood and paper. The use of colour illustrates muted, half forgotten memories of buildings, spaces, homes and landscapes gone by.
