Open Studios: The Pattern Guild

We’re very excited about having extended the Open Studios applications for a bit longer, and in light of this we spoke to The Pattern Guild about their experience with the Open Studios last year.

Can you tell us a bit about your studio life and what you do?
We are a design studio specialising in Textiles, we produce our own fabrics and product range as well as bespoke projects for clients.

Limited edition t-shirt for Art of Noise’s latest album

Our main activities in the Bussey Building include:

  • Making scarves, pencil cases, bags etc.
  • Researching and designing patterns for fabric or print
  • Experimenting with materials and processes

How did you find the Open Studio experience last year?
It was fantastic, it was great to meet customers that came to see us who we only knew from online orders. It was amazing to see the huge variety of creative forces here and meet all the other studio members.

There were lots of events spread around during the festival and there was a definite buzz all over Peckham.

Did it bring you together with any interesting people?
It was great to meet other makers and check out some amazing workshops. There is a high appreciation for traditional crafts and maintaining equipment that is slowly fading out of use.

What was your favourite part of Peckham Festival 2016?

Design for Gosnells Mead limited edition bottles.

The opening night party was lots of fun and an event to focus on for inviting people to visit us. The stalls on the weekend made it feel really relaxed with people eating and drinking and enjoying Copeland Park as a place to hang out.

What else do you guys having going on at the moment?

A limited edition t-shirt for Art of Noise for the release of their remastered album “In Visible Silence“.

A pattern design for Gosnell’s South London Barrel Festival coming up in August. Then it’s on to designing and finalising our winter collection.

[post_content] => The Pattern Guild is a Peckham-based design studio founded in 2013 by Amber James and Fergus McDonnell as a collaborative project to explore pattern and textiles.
Both founding members came from a Graphic Design background that then evolved into a passion for surface designs, in particular fabric screen-printing.
Through experimentation with processes and materials they have evolved into a successful design studio.
They combine bold geometric patterns with expertly designed products, made in London by a small team of highly skilled makers.
Their patterns are applied to a wide variety of surfaces including clothing, accessories, screen printed artwork, embroidery and even bottles of Gosnells Mead.
By using the best materials, sourced ethically and sustainably, and method of form follows function, they create designs and products that are perfectly suited to their purpose.
A lot of research and development goes into their range of products, so that they perform well and last a long time."
