The London WIP Club

14th September 2017 Film

WIP Peckham!
19:00-00:00
Thursday 14th September, Montpelier Pub, 43 Choumert Road, Peckham

If you didn’t manage to get tickets to the sell-out Launch Night on Thursday at PeckhamPlex, why not head along to The Montpelier instead for WIP Peckham!, a night of free film and drinks from the independent documentary film-making collective, The London Work in Progress Club. It promises to be an invigorating night of new and exciting shorts and a chance to connect with local filmmakers.

I spoke with one of the founders of London WIP Club Martha McAlpine, a factual film-maker…

So, what inspired you to start The London WIP Club?
The London WIP Club, started by three film-makers (myself, Sue Carpenter and Vicky Cameron Mowat) exists as a nurturing and open grassroots network of film-makers, supporting each other in our careers and ambitions. Being an independent documentary film-maker can be isolating; although there are already networks out there, we felt strongly we wanted to create our own. The industry can sometimes be intimidating and for people starting out, it can be difficult to access certain things without knowing the right people. As well as providing a valuable network, we recreate a cinema setting where film-makers can screen their unfinished films and get invaluable feedback from the audience. We are run by three women, but open to all interested in documentary making.

Check out our MeetUp group for more info.

Can you tell us a bit about the WIP Peckham! night at The Montpelier?
We’ll be screening some scenes from a documentary feature work-in-progress called I Am Belmaya. The film is about a young orphaned girl born into the lowest caste in Nepal, who discovered film-making and her life was transformed. We’ll also be screening a trailer for a short documentary about a local Peckham fixture Dominic Jones of Peckham Cuts. There will be opportunities for discussion and free drinks!

What are your favourite things about Peckham?
Obviously, the music and art scene, including Holdrons Arcade; Peckham Cuts, Ballaami Radio and Peckham Vision. I like the gritty vibe about Peckham too, with the mix of cultures and pound shops.

The London WIP Club will be at the Montpelier pub on 43 Choumert Road, 19:00-00:00 on Thursday 14th September.
The rest of the time, they organise meetups for drinks, film screenings and networking events on a regular basis, open to all interested in the art of film-making.
